As the election of 2008 looms, I'm particularly worried, particularly about the race for Delaware's at-large seat in the U.S. Congress, which has been held by Republican Mike Castle for over a decade. Mr. Castle has retained a pretty moderate voting record, (President Bush's first veto was of Mike Castle's stem cell research bill in 2006) but he has not taken a definitive position on Iraq. Therefore, it's my opinion, time for Mr. Castle to go; he has grown out of touch with the issues that affect the citizens in his state. As a lifelong resident of the first state, I believe Mr. Castle is more inclined to support the Republicans in congress, then to support measures that carry out the will of the people of Delaware. Looking at his congressional record, what has the gentleman from Delaware accomplished? He was the main proponent of the States Quarter Act... and that's about it to tell you the truth. However, in this contentious race, my party, (the Democratic Party) doesn't have the candidate who is going to deliver the final blow to Mike Castle's impenetrable suit of political armor.
The Democrats do have some great candidates running, and they are all good people. I have met each one, and wouldn't have a problem voting for any of them. The candidates are Jerry Northington, who is a Vietnam vet and peace activist, Dennis Spivack who is a lawyer and was the Democratic nominee for congress in 2006, and Karen Hartley-Nagle who works with Common Cause. However, I am afraid these candidates aren't going to be the ones who would be able to unseat Mike Castle. If the primary were held today, my vote would be for Jerry Northington; I believe he holds the right message for this election cycle. Although very well spoken, Jerry an is unseasoned politician who would be going up against a "Delaware institution" in Mike Castle. What the Democrats need is a smart, young, experienced, passionate, and substantive candidate, who past Castle voters would have no problem voting for. I think someone like Attorney General Beau Biden would fill this void wonderfully. By the time of the election he would have been AG for more then 2 years. He is an experienced campaigner, with plenty of political savvy. He is extremely intelligent, and best of all, he can beat Castle. Now, it would be difficult to say the least, but Beau Biden has been through tough races before. If you look back at the extremely nasty and contentious AG race back in 2006, you will see that political attacks are not new to Beau Biden. His opponent, Ferris Wharton, went after Beau like a pack of ravenous dogs on a T-Bone steak. It got to the point where it was patronizing, and down right insulting. However, we all know how that turned out: Beau went on to become an excellent AG and Ferris Wharton went off getting caught in a hit and run scandal.
I'm here today to encourage Joseph Robinette Biden III to run for congress. We need a fighter and a qualified candidate who can beat Castle. Run, Beau, RUN!
